Stanford University is renowned for driving innovation, but also recognizes in many cases retaining pieces of its history is important for the future. This concept is displayed in recent renovations of some of the campus’ most historic buildings.
Established in 1885, Stanford is rich in history, and is home to many notable landmarks such as the Hoover Tower, Angel of Grief and The Burghers of Calais. Given the university’s prestige, it has maintained many of its buildings with a goal of retaining the authenticity of the past while making them more efficient for the future.
After a renovation of the student housing in 2000, the architects for a recent upgrade to Toyon Hall decided on Simpson doors to aid them in their pursuit of historical integrity.
Simpson can make any door its clients dream up, which usually means a unique design or size or detail about the door like custom glass or novel moldings. But, sometimes it’s something like the wood species used, as was the case in Toyon Hall, where the doors were made of select ash sourced from New Hampshire. Simpson’s ability to customize also made possible a wide variety of dimensions, as the designers specified more than 250 doors in various widths and heights for the project. The wood species combined with the wide range of door sizes helped create the desired cohesive visual appearance of the student housing.
Simpson enables ideas to become a reality by giving its customers the ability to personalize their doors in many ways, from size, to style, wood species and more.
